David Thomas had a very challenging childhood suffering at the hands of his alcoholic mother and aged physically abusive stepfather. At the age of 16, he went off the rails burgling shops and schools. He attempted suicide twice and nearly killed a police officer. He got a juvenile criminal conviction and was expelled from school. He has never been to college or University.
At the age of 20, he joined the Fire Service and was an operational fire-fighter for 11 years. He struggled with the studying and after an officer said he would never pass, bought a book on memory techniques.
8 months later, at the age of 27, he went to the World Memory Championships and came 4 th . He also became one of only 4 International Grandmasters of Memory in the world at the time.
